It moved from the basement of the Old Dorm Block where i believe it had been since the beginning into its current location about 2002. The room that the Record Library was in use to be the Student Senate Room. It was a great moment when the Senate voted to kick itself out of its own room to give over to the record library. I do not remember exactly why we had to move out of ODB but it may have had to do with the transition from 104.1 to 97.9. We got a new transmitter installed and for a year or so in 2003 or 4 we were actually broadcasting all over SE Portland. That vinyl library is priceless, a good friend of mine and I reorganized, alphabetized, and made all the plastic labels that you saw in that photograph and uncovered some truly amazing gems and a few very rare records.

Good times. I'm sorry that the school gave up it's frequency, it was nice to know that somebody might be listening in their car or dorm room. I suppose digital is fine, but it would be nice if the stream was available on things like TuneIn...

Cheers!nico!https://www.blogger.com/profile/10349254386794652669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5889627852774263513.post-48657341658503125422015-11-30T10:58:55.926-08:002015-11-30T10:58:55.926-08:00Thanks for the update, Dan. From the mid-1960's thru the mid-1980's, KLOK was one of the most popular stations on the dial, programming a format comprised mainly of oldies (50's & 60's pop/rock) and current adult contemporary lite rock (Barry Manilow, Carpenters, etc.) The studios were the most beautiful I had ever seen for a radio station and the entire place oozed of class.

The original 50,000 watt transmitter (an RCA Ampliphase) and the back-up (an RCA 10,000 watt BTA-10U) were quite a formidable sight and when the 50kW transitter was fired up, the effect was magical.

I have not been inside KLOK in nearly 30 years. I made the mistake of visiting the station after Bill Weaver had sold it and the new owners (a Spanish language group) had absolutely ruined the interior. Subdividing the lobby into office cubicles, painting over the beautifully stained redwood borders in tacky hi-gloss white, green & red paints, and just generally not having any sense nor respect for what they now had in their possession. It was heartbreaking to see how the facility was being destroyed by the carelessness and boorish taste of the new operators.

I have been inside many radio stations in my life, but I never saw one as beautiful and as functional as KLOK during its heyday. I'm glad I have the memories of what once was and I only wish I had taken photographs of the facility when I worked there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5889627852774263513.post-27524798267191273982015-08-28T21:04:14.338-07:002015-08-28T21:04:14.338-07:00Thanks for this post, it's great to see the WS...Thanks for this post, it's great to see the WSRN studio again. It was an interview show hosted by Dan Zevin, who interviewed everyday people - 7-11 clerk, mailman, etc. He took a pic of every guest and taped it to the wall.

- The proper name of the local show is "On The Town with Mikey Dee." Mikey's name is kept in the show name to honor his contribution and life. Studio D was also renamed Studio Dee in his honor.

Fun fact: I recently learned that John Hodgman had a show at WMFO as a high school student in the late '80s!

dd Drugless Douglashttp://druglessdouglas.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5889627852774263513.post-30644021921672255992014-08-31T07:17:20.840-07:002014-08-31T07:17:20.840-07:00Best station ev-ah, as we say in Boston! It is more or less centrally located on campus making it a good location to start from.

There were five dorms when I attended, and initially they were configured with the two Women's buildings on one end of campus and the three Men's buildings at the opposite end. During my time as a student that was changed so there were adjacent men's and women's buildings. I think the first co-ed dorm was established either very late 80s or early 90s. I ran across some University of Portland yearbooks from the 1960s and 1970s this summer and found some tidbits about the station. In those yearbooks I see references to broadcasts over 570 AM carrier current (1961), 660AM (1968), and from B.C. at 860AM(1976). I helped move the studios to their current home in my role as General Manager in 1986/87. Prior to that it was located in the Student Communications Building, a small, "temporary" structure which no longer exists (it was in the space at the North end of the Quad, currently occupied by Franz Hall). Carrier current transmitters were placed in 5 of the 6 (then existing) dormitories, and operated at either 840, 850 or 860 KHz. When local station KPAM signed on at 860KHz in the 1990s it was necessary to change frequencies. Equipment at the time of the move consisted of a "Gatesway II" console (on-air), with two Technics turntables and a smattering of cart machines (remember those?). A year or two after the move a used Auditronics console was acquired to replace the Gatesway II. A couple of DAT machines were purchased and CD players made their debut in the late '80s. The basement was originally the darkroom for the student newspaper and the ventilation system shook the whole house! Originally the station also was a subscriber to AP news wire services. Formats have varied from top-40 to alternative and lots of others. Some faculty members even took air shifts and played their favorite genres. The station has also launched a few local radio careers over the years.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01031532997970109918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5889627852774263513.post-58886193992724372662013-08-12T22:47:24.671-07:002013-08-12T22:47:24.671-07:00Since this was written, we switched at KPSU from t...Since this was written, we switched at KPSU from the old automixer to iMedia, and run it on an iMac.
