WERS isn't very good, it's full of rich long island kids playing top 40 hip hop. The two best stations in Boston are 90.3 WZBC and 88.1 WMBR. WZBC is best in the morning, then plays indie rock all day long, and they play the best stuff. ZBC goes experimental at night, which is still good, it used to be amazing in the 90's. MBR is great in the morning, then goes to 50's and 60's garage rock in the afternoon, but then gets good at night again with indie rock shows.

It's so sad and unfortunate that college radio/public radio stations are now anti-pop. Unless you're doing some fusion-jazz-avant-garde-art-rock hybrid, it's virtually impossible to get airplay--especially in Los Angeles. Up-tempo, major chords with harmonies and catchy hooks? Good luck.

I was at WFAL from 94-98, and I remember there definitely being two different styles for FAL and BGU. WFAL pretty much just stuck to music that was sub-mainstream but not so indie you wouldn't have been able to buy it at Finders or Madhatters. BGU seemed more focused on the eclectic and underground.

I went to Edinboro University in the late 80s and early 90s. I used to listen to that show. There was also a very faint Gannon University radio station that played pre-alternative music. I've been trying to find some of that music ever since: Strawberry Zots, Blue Clocks Green, etc.

As a side note, my brother, who is eight years older than me, also had a radio show at WFSE. He's been in radio most of his adult life now.

The source for the Ken Kesey anecdote during the 1966 campus event is from Phil Garlington (City Editor) "Whatever it was... it was," The Daily Gater (student newspaper) 94:14 (5 October 1966) 1, 4-5. The photo essay included photographs from Bub Hirschfeld of the San Francisco Mime Troupe performing on the Quad and family activities outside (there were lots of kids) and a sot of Hill Hamm's light show equipment and dancing.

No idea he was a one and done when I knew him (aka A senior or co-term). The sationr eally started changing then as we got more serous about competing with KFJC over the quality of our programming and also got far more community input volunteer-wise. rad gard students and older Bay Area music fans AKA engineers, geeks, freaks, et cetera.

I look forwaard to reading more deeply in your blog. I too started radio in 1986 at URY, the UK's oldest independent radio station while on a Rotary Post-graduate fellowship. Then the self-same Yo "trained" me in 1987 at KZSU AKA sent in my FCC license form. I was at KZSU until June 1996 when I moved to MS and was Chief Announcer an General Manager. Wow. Congratulations to USF. You found a way to turn off a whole generation of young listeners to classical music. It's underhanded and dictatorial tactics by administrative decision like this that turned campuses into warzones in the 60's.

I just wanna say as a WXYC dj (since 2001), I've known about and sporadically listened to KUSF since 2003, even tho' I've never been to San Francisco. Perhaps I'm being presumptuous, but I'd lay hard cash down that radio people in Moscow, Idaho were also aware of KUSF, and this was likewise not the first time they'd heard KUSF djs spinning for the KUSF entity that we all have come to know and love.

Speaking again for myself, there is a long list of left-handed radio stations that I tune to from time-to-time, thanks to the internet, both for simple enjoyment, and also to see what's going on around the world in NCE radio.

I have a difficult time imagining I'm the only person who does this, especially as a NCE dj.

Friday was a marvelous moment, and hopefully the FCC will uphold the principles of the law that makes us all NCE, and halt the rather commercial action that USF has initiated. We're NCE for a reason. Too bad the USF admins behind this "deal" didn't have anyone available to explain to them exactly what holding a license for a Non-Commercial Educational radio station means, by the spirit of the law.

Listening to the broadcast on WMFU in NYC two things happened:

1) I forgot that Amoeba wasn't just a few blocks away

2) I remembered just how important community radio is.

It's unfortunate that we have to fight to keep community radio in the community and on the airwaves, but it's something we simply must do.
